TIMESINDONESIA, AS – Plankton, organisme kecil yang menjadi sumber makanan bagi berbagai makhluk laut seperti paus biru, juga menghasilkan separuh oksigen yang dihirup manusia.

"Plankton lebih dari sekedar makanan paus," kata Chris Bowler, seorang kepala peneliti di Pusat Riset Ilmiah Nasional Prancis yang juga terlibat dalam penelitian plankton tersebut, seperti dikutip REUTERS.

Plankton termasuk hewan dan tumbuhan yang sangat kecil, larva ikan, bakteri, virus dan mikroorganisme lainnya yang melayang-layang di lautan.

Menumpang sekunar Tara, kapal layar bertiang dua, para peneliti menghabiskan 3,5 tahun mengambil 35.000 sampel plankton di 210 tempat di seluruh dunia. Mereka meneliti persebaran organisme, melacak bagaimana mereka berinteraksi satu sama lain dan dan juga melakukan analisis genetik.

"Meski kecil, organisme ini memainkan peran penting di sistem kehidupan bumi, menyediakan setengah oksigen di bumi setiap tahun melalui fotosintesis dan berada di dasar rantai makanan yang menjadi tempat kehidupan laut bergantung," ujarnya.

Para peneliti menelaah urutan deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) dan menentukan ada 40 juta gen plankton, yang sebelumnya belum banyak diketahui.

Kebanyakan dari plankton yang mereka teliti lebih beragam secara genetik dari yang sudah ada. Tetapi, keragaman virus laut lebih rendah daripada yang diperkirakan.

Dengan menghilangkan karbon dioksida dari atmosfer dan mengubahnya menjadi karbon organik melalui fotosintesis, plankton menyediakan penyangga tehadap peningkatan karbon dioksida yang dihasilkan oleh pembakaran bahan bakar fosil, jelas Bowler.

Para peneliti juga menemukan bahwa kebanyakan interaksi antara organisme plankton bersifat parasit. Mereka juga menemukan persebaran luas virus di lautan.

"Karena anggota plankton terbanyak adalah bakteria, sebagian besar virus di laut diperkirakan menginfeksi bakteria," kata ahli kelautan dari University of Arizona Jennifer Brum.

Brum menjelaskan dalam seteguk air laut, ada sekitar 200 juta virus dan sebagian besar virus menginfeksi sekitar 20 juta bakteri yang ada.

Direktur Ekesekutif Ekspedisi Tara Romain Trouble mengatakan sekunar telah berlayar sejauh 140.000 kilometer selama perjalanan riset ini.

Selama perjalanan, mereka pernah terjebak selama 10 hari di es Arktik, menghadapi badai di Laut Mediterania dan Selat Magellan dan berlayar di Teluk Aden dengan kawalan angkatan laut Prancis agar tidak diserang bajak laut.(*)
