Budidaya ayam kalkun mungkin masih terkesan awam bagi sebagian masyarakat. Padahal, jika ditekuni, keuntungan yang diperoleh bisa mencapai jutaan rupiah. Perawatan yang cukup mudah serta bahan pakannya pun mudah didapatkan di sejumlah daerah.
Seperti halnya peternakan ayam kalkun milik Ari Wijaya di Kelurahan Kademangan, Kecamatan Kademangan, Kabupaten Blitar. Di sini puluhan ayam kalkun dibudidayakan di kurungan-kurungan sederhana yang terbuat dari bambu.
Ari mengaku, prospek budidaya ayam kalkun saat ini cukup menjanjikan. Menurut dia, budidaya ayam kalkun lebih menguntungkan, mulai dari perawatannya lebih mudah dan harganya lebih menjanjikan berkali lipat dibandingkan ayam kampung.
"Untuk ayam kalkun ini harganya relatif sangat bagus. Itu karena untuk peternak masih sedikit, sedangkan permintaan cukup banyak dari resto-resto itu," terangnya saat ditemui BlitarTIMES pada Selasa (10/9/2019).
Menurut Ari, pakan ayam kalkun sendiri mudah dijumpai di sekitar pekarangan. Misalnya saja daun pepaya dan enceng gondok, yang merupakan satu di antara campuran pakan untuk ayam kalkun.
Kedua tanaman tersebut merupakan makanan kesukaan dari ayam kalkun. Sehingga, selain mudah didapatkan, campuran daun pepaya dan enceng gondok bisa menghemat pakan lebih banyak.
Hal ini berbeda dengan berternak ayam kampung karena harus membeli seluruh pakan ayam kampung. Jelas, hal itu akan menambah biaya operasional peternakan.
"Untuk ayam kalkun ini kami bisa irit di pakannya. Bukan berarti irit karena makannya sedikit, tapi dengan pakan campuran itu kebutuhan ayam bener-bener cukup di ayam," ungkapnya.
Hal itu Ari terapkan kepada 20 pasang ayam kalkun di kandang indukan. Dari jumlah induk ayam kalkun tersebut, ia mengatakan bisa mendapatkan 200 butir telur setiap bulan dengan risiko gagal menetas hanya 5 persen.
Menurut Ari, budidaya ayam kalkun merupakan salah satu peluang usaha yang menggiurkan. Pasalnya, permintaan ayam kalkun terus meningkat. Terutama dari resto-resto. Selain pakannya sangat mudah, ayam kalkun juga dapat beradaptasi dengan mudah di lingkungan barunya.
Selain itu, ayam kalkun memiliki harga jual yang lebih tinggi bila dibandingkan dengan unggas lain pada umumnya. Ari biasa menjual ayam kalkun jenis bronze Rp 300.000-350.000 dengan berat 7-8 kg. Setiap bulannya dia bisa meraup untung 2 juta rupiah.
"Dari kegiatan sampingan ini saja untung bisa 2 juta per bulan. Biasanya yang banyak dari resto dan juga pesanan warga sekitar," tukasnya.
