JATIMTIMES - Gumuk Pasir Parangkusumo merupakan obyek wisata alam yang berada di sebelah barat Pantai Parangtritis. Tepatnya di Kalurahan Parangtritis, Kapanewon Kretek, Kabupaten Bantul, Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta.

Destinasi wisata alam Gumuk Pasir Parangkusumo memiliki beragam keistimewaan. Mengingat jumlahnya yang hanya terbatas di dunia.

Gumuk berasal dari Bahasa Jawa yang jika diterjemahkan ke dalam bahasa Indonesia artinya adalah gundukan-gundukan pasir yang terhampar luas. Wisata alam Gumuk Pasir Parangkusumo terbentuk dari material Gunung Merapi. Kemudian mengalami transportasi melalui Sungai Opak dan Sungai Progo. Material Gunung Merapi yang melalui dua sungai tersebut kemudian terbawa oleh ombak dan mengendap langsung ke arah pantai.

Material yang mengendap tersebut kemudian mengering sebelum akhirnya terbawa angin hingga terbang kedaratan. Sehingga mengalami proses perubahan wujud menjadi Gumuk Pasir.

Berkat keistimewaan yang dimiliki, Gumuk Pasir Parangkusumo tercatat sebagai salah satu warisan dunia (world heritage). Wisata alam ini membentuk endapan pasir pantai setinggi 20 meter di atas permukaan laut.

Melansir dari berbagai pemberitaan hanya ada empat negara di dunia yang memiliki gunung pasir. Selain di Indonesia, ketiga negara lainnya yaitu Filipina, Vietnam, dan Meksiko.

Selain sebagai laboratorium alam dari berbagai cabang keilmuan dan kebumian, ekosistem khas yang dibentuk dari Alam Gumuk Pasir ini juga menjadi sebuah fenomena yang sangat langka.

Wisata alam Gumuk Pasir Parangkusumo menyuguhkan pemandangan yang mirip dengan suasana di Gurun Sahara yang ada di Afrika. Perlu diketahui, Gumuk Pasir Parangkusumo memiliki suhu yang cukup ekstrim.

Ketika siang hari, suhu di Gumuk Pasir Parangkusumo sangat terik dan panas. Sebaliknya, saat malam hari suhu di sana berubah menjadi sangat dingin.

Sementara itu, pasir yang terdapat di area Gumuk Pasir Parangkusumo bisa dikatakan unik. Sebab memiliki karakteristik yang mirip dengan gurun pasir yang ada di negara Meksiko.
