JATIMTIMES - Kata "OK" atau "Oke" telah menjadi bagian dari komunikasi sehari-hari di berbagai belahan dunia. Baik dalam percakapan lisan maupun tulisan, kata ini digunakan untuk menyampaikan persetujuan, penerimaan, atau sekadar memastikan tidak ada yang salah.
Namun, tahukah kamu bahwa "OK" sebenarnya adalah sebuah singkatan yang memiliki sejarah panjang dan unik?

Awalnya, terdapat banyak teori mengenai asal-usul kata "OK". Ada yang percaya bahwa kata ini berasal dari bahasa suku Indian, "Okeh," yang berarti “ya”. Teori lain menyebutkan bahwa kata ini berasal dari merek biskuit asal Amerika Serikat bernama "Orrin Kendall."
Namun, penelitian Allen Walker Read, seorang ahli bahasa, pada tahun 1960-an mengungkapkan fakta menarik. Dalam studinya yang berjudul The First Stage in the History of 'O.K.' (1963), Read menemukan bahwa kata "OK" pertama kali muncul pada 23 Maret 1839 di surat kabar Boston Morning Post .
Kala itu, redaktur Charles Gordon Greene menggunakan kata "OK" dalam sebuah artikel sebagai bagian dari tren singkatan yang sedang populer di Amerika Serikat.
Di era 1830-an, masyarakat gemar menciptakan singkatan lucu seperti "RTBS" (Remains to be Seen) dan "OMG" (Oh My God). Greene pun memperkenalkan "OK" sebagai singkatan dari frasa humoris "oll korrect," ejaan yang sengaja dipelesetkan dari "all correct."

Seiring berjalannya waktu, "OK" tidak hanya menjadi simbol persetujuan, tetapi juga memiliki fleksibilitas dalam makna. Dalam beberapa konteks, kata ini bisa menunjukkan respons positif maupun negatif, tergantung pada intonasi dan ekspresi penutur.
Dalam bahasa Indonesia, kata ini diadaptasi menjadi "Oke," sebagaimana tercatat dalam Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia (KBBI). Maknanya tetap sama, yaitu "kata untuk menyatakan setuju" atau bentuk konfirmasi.
Sama seperti di negara lain, "Oke" sering digunakan untuk menunjukkan persetujuan, penerimaan, atau memastikan tidak ada masalah dalam percakapan.
