JATIMTIMES - Universitas Brawijaya (UB) bersiap melakukan langkah strategis dengan perubahan nama Fakultas Matematika dan Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam (FMIPA) menjadi Fakultas Matematika, Sains, dan Teknologi (MST). Perubahan ini tengah diproses secara internal dan ditargetkan mulai digunakan pada Agustus tahun ini, bertepatan dengan momentum dies natalis FMIPA UB.
Dekan Fakultas MIPA UB , Prof. Ir. Sukir Maryanto , S.Si., M.Si., Ph.D, membenarkan bahwa pengajuan perubahan nama tersebut sudah berjalan. Menurut dia, pergantian nomenklatur bukan sekadar kosmetik administratif, melainkan bagian dari pembaruan cara pandang terhadap disiplin ilmu yang selama ini kerap dianggap sulit dan menakutkan.
“Kita sudah mengajukan perubahan nama dan sekarang masih berproses. Dari MIPA menjadi MST, yaitu Matematika, Sains, dan Teknologi. Harapan kami, perubahan ini sekaligus memperbarui mindset masyarakat bahwa MIPA itu bukan ilmu yang menakutkan,” ujar Prof Sukir, sapaan akrabnya saat diwawancarai JatimTIMES belum lama ini.

Ia menjelaskan, selama ini citra MIPA sering dilekatkan pada ilmu murni yang kaku dan identik dengan profesi guru atau dosen. Padahal, menurutnya, spektrum keilmuan di fakultas tersebut telah berkembang jauh lebih aplikatif dan adaptif terhadap kebutuhan industri global.
Dengan membawa embel-embel “Teknologi”, fakultas ingin menegaskan bahwa pembelajaran tidak hanya berhenti pada teori dasar, tetapi juga menyentuh ranah terapan. Mahasiswa didorong untuk masuk ke sektor perniagaan, aktuaria, data engineer , hingga industri strategis.
“Output lulusan bukan hanya guru, dosen, atau di bimbingan belajar. Banyak yang terjun ke dunia industri, menjadi aktuaris, data engineer , bahkan mendirikan perusahaan konsultan. Di bidang kimia dan biologi pun sudah banyak yang bergerak ke sektor industri,” katanya.
Sukir memaparkan, sejumlah alumni MIPA UB telah menempati posisi penting di berbagai sektor. Di industri pertahanan, salah satu direktur teknik di PT Pindad berasal dari alumni MIPA. Di perusahaan perminyakan, posisi vice president juga diisi lulusan fakultas tersebut. Tak hanya itu, ada pula alumni yang menjadi pengusaha hingga anggota DPR.
“Banyak alumni kami yang membuktikan bahwa MIPA bisa berperan signifikan di dunia industri dan kebijakan publik,” ujarnya.
Perubahan nama menjadi Fakultas Matematika, Sains, dan Teknologi juga disebut selaras dengan tren global. Sejumlah perguruan tinggi, baik di dalam maupun luar negeri, telah lebih dahulu menggunakan nomenklatur serupa untuk menegaskan integrasi antara sains dasar dan teknologi terapan.

Meski demikian, unsur “Matematika” tetap dipertahankan dalam nama baru. Keputusan itu diambil setelah diskusi dengan berbagai pemangku kepentingan yang menilai identitas keilmuan tersebut tetap relevan dan menjadi fondasi utama pengembangan sains dan teknologi.
Terkait mekanisme perubahan, Sukir menjelaskan bahwa sebagai Perguruan Tinggi Negeri Berbadan Hukum (PTN-BH), UB memiliki otonomi dalam pengelolaan fakultas, termasuk perubahan nama. Prosesnya dimulai dari rapat senat fakultas, diusulkan dekan kepada rektor, direview oleh unit terkait, kemudian dibahas di Senat Akademik Universitas dan Majelis Wali Amanat (MWA). Jika disetujui, rektor akan menetapkan keputusan resmi.
“Saat ini prosesnya masih berjalan. Kami berharap pada dies tahun ini sudah bisa menggunakan nama baru, sekitar Agustus,” katanya.
Perubahan nama FMIPA UB menjadi Fakultas Matematika, Sains, dan Teknologi bukan hanya penyesuaian istilah, melainkan penegasan arah baru. Fakultas ingin menunjukkan bahwa sains bukan menara gading yang menakutkan, melainkan fondasi inovasi yang relevan dengan kebutuhan zaman dan dunia kerja.
