Fenomena El Niño kerap dikaitkan dengan meningkatnya risiko kekeringan di Indonesia. Kondisi ini terjadi karena adanya perubahan pola suhu permukaan laut dan sirkulasi atmosfer yang berdampak langsung pada pembentukan awan hujan.

Badan Meteorologi, Klimatologi, dan Geofisika atau BMKG menjelaskan bahwa El Niño menyebabkan berkurangnya curah hujan di wilayah Indonesia, terutama di bagian selatan seperti Jawa, Bali, dan Nusa Tenggara.

Apa yang Terjadi Saat El Niño?

Secara ilmiah, El Niño terjadi ketika suhu permukaan laut di Samudra Pasifik bagian tengah dan timur mengalami pemanasan di atas normal. Kondisi ini menggeser pusat pembentukan awan hujan menjauh dari wilayah Indonesia.

Akibatnya, wilayah Indonesia kehilangan pasokan uap air yang biasanya menjadi bahan utama pembentukan hujan.

Mengapa Bisa Menyebabkan Kekeringan?

Dalam kondisi normal, angin pasat membawa uap air dari Samudra Pasifik ke wilayah Indonesia, sehingga mendukung terbentuknya hujan.

Namun saat El Niño terjadi:

  • Awan hujan bergeser ke tengah Samudra Pasifik
  • Curah hujan di Indonesia menurun drastis
  • Musim kemarau menjadi lebih panjang dan kering

BMKG menyebut kondisi ini sebagai salah satu faktor utama penyebab kekeringan di Indonesia.

“El Niño berpotensi mengurangi curah hujan di sebagian besar wilayah Indonesia sehingga meningkatkan risiko kekeringan, terutama pada musim kemarau,” demikian penjelasan BMKG dalam rilis resminya.

Dampak El Niño di Indonesia

Penurunan curah hujan akibat El Niño dapat memicu berbagai dampak, antara lain:

  • Krisis air bersih di sejumlah daerah
  • Penurunan hasil pertanian, terutama padi
  • Peningkatan risiko kebakaran hutan dan lahan
  • Suhu udara lebih panas dari biasanya

Wilayah seperti Jawa Timur, Nusa Tenggara, dan sebagian Kalimantan termasuk daerah yang paling rentan terdampak.

Seberapa Besar Dampaknya?

Kekuatan dampak El Niño bergantung pada intensitasnya. Semakin kuat fenomena ini, maka semakin besar potensi kekeringan yang terjadi.

BMKG mencatat bahwa peluang munculnya El Niño pada 2026 berada di kisaran menengah, namun tetap perlu diwaspadai karena dapat memperpanjang musim kemarau.

Apa yang Bisa Dilakukan?

Menghadapi potensi kekeringan akibat El Niño, masyarakat diimbau untuk mulai melakukan langkah antisipasi, seperti:

  • Menghemat penggunaan air
  • Menyimpan cadangan air sejak musim hujan
  • Menyesuaikan pola tanam bagi petani
  • Menghindari aktivitas yang memicu kebakaran

El Niño merupakan fenomena alam yang dapat mengubah pola cuaca secara signifikan. Dengan memahami mekanismenya, masyarakat dapat lebih siap menghadapi dampaknya, terutama dalam menghadapi risiko kekeringan yang lebih panjang dan ekstrem.
